Dan is struggling with his self confidence. Well, let's be honest. Dan has no self confidence and struggles to face the harsh realities of life and the pessimistic thoughts and voices that inhabit and nag his brain constantly. Phil tries to help his friend to realize that he really isn't as much as a monster as he thinks of himself to be. These two friends embark on a journey of love, hate, discovery, and confusion. And will they even still be friends by the end of the journey? Will Dan's turmoil break apart their friendship or turn it into something more? Dan and Phil try to answer to the burning question, How to Help Howell? WARNING: Some of this story may be triggering, so if you're sensitive to depressing topics and/or thoughts, gay slurs, mentions of eating disorders, and self harm, this may not be the story for you, which is perfectly fine. The year is 1346. Europe has just entered a time period known as the "Renaissance", where there are many political, social, economical, and technological reforms occurring. Social classes are used to classify people, with wealthy rulers and nobles placed at the very top, and poor workers and peasants at the bottom, often living in deep poverty. Phillip Lester happened to be one of these workers. Prince Daniel James Howell (lll) happened to be one of the wealthiest men in England. When they meet, one falls for the other, and vice versa.

Dan Howell is an insecure, self-doubting 17-year-old who not only wants, but needs a fresh start; he needs to forget about his past. Phil Lester finds Dan mysterious and intriguing, wanting to know and befriend him. The undeniable chemistry, however, refuses to go unseen, and they must confront their feelings. Dan and Phil, these polar opposites, must try to find a way to make this unique connection not only survive, but thrive.
